Short-answer questions

Create short-answer questions for online tests

Let learners type a word, a number, or a short explanation. In NineQuiz, enter accepted answers for automatic grading, or read and grade responses that need judgment.

  • Automatically grade questions with fixed answers
  • Grade explanations for meaning
  • Instructions and examples for both approaches

Sample question

Try typing an answer

Calculate the rectangle's area, enter the result, and select “Check answer.” This example has a fixed answer key. The walkthrough also shows how to create a response that a person reads and grades.

Try an example

A rectangle is 8 cm long and 5 cm wide. What is its area in cm²?

Enter only the number, without a unit.

Answer / grading criteria

The area is 8 × 5 = 40 cm². Enter 40 because the question already states the unit. To assess how a learner calculated it, ask them to show their work.

01 · When to use it

What can you assess with short answers?

Recall vocabulary and facts

Ask learners to recall and type a word, name, or term, such as the English verb meaning “take something temporarily.” For review activities in Quick Quiz, choose “Short Answer with Correct Answers” and enter the accepted responses in advance for automatic grading.

Check a calculation result

Ask for a specific result, such as an area, duration, or percentage. Put the unit in the question so learners know what to enter.

Ask for reasoning or a course of action

Request a few sentences explaining, for example, why customer information must be confirmed. The grader reads the response and awards points.

Choose another format when…

You want learners to choose from provided options: use multiple-choice questions. If they need to submit a document or other file, see “Upload File” in the editor.

02 · Choose an approach

Choose the grading method before writing

Two NineQuiz menu options have similar names. The difference is who grades the response: the system or a person.

01

Automatic grading against accepted answers

Choose “Short Answer with Correct Answers” when the response is specific, such as 40 or borrow.

How to set it up
Enter the answer in “List of correct answers.” To accept another spelling or form, select “Add correct answer” and enter it separately.
Keep in mind

Test the forms you want to accept. Do not assume the system understands synonyms, converts units, or evaluates an explanation.

02

Read and grade the response yourself

Choose “Short Answer” in Online Exams when learners need to explain, express an opinion, or show their method. A person reads and grades the response; this is not automatic keyword grading.

How to set it up
State the task and suggested length, such as “Answer in 2–3 sentences.” Prepare the required points and grading criteria separately.
Keep in mind

The “Reply” area in the editor illustrates where learners will answer. Do not put a model answer there; this type has no automatic answer-key list.

03 · Step-by-step guide

How to create short-answer questions in NineQuiz

Choose a grading method. Each step includes an editor illustration showing the field to use.

Choose a grading method, then select each step to see what to enter and where.

This example uses 40 as the answer key. The learner types the result instead of choosing from a list.

Open your test and add a question. You can place a short-answer question after multiple-choice questions; there is no need to create a separate test.

What to check

The new question is in the section you plan to assign.

04 · Practical examples

Three examples to adapt for your quiz

Each scenario includes a question, answer, and suggestions for adapting it to your classroom or workplace.

01

Math: calculate an area

Use this to review the area formula for rectangles.

Sample question
A rectangle is 8 cm long and 5 cm wide. What is its area in cm²? Enter only the number.
Answer / grading criteria

Choose “Short Answer with Correct Answers” and enter 40.

Why use this question?

There is one numeric result, so you can enter an answer key. The unit cm² appears in the question and does not need typing again.

Adapt it to your quiz

Change the dimensions and recalculate the answer. You could also write “The rectangle's area is ___ cm²” following the guide to creating fill-in-the-blank questions. To assess the method too, use “Short Answer” and ask learners to show their calculation.

02

English: recall a word

Use this after teaching borrow and lend.

Sample question
Write the English verb meaning “take something temporarily, intending to give it back.” Use the base form.
Answer / grading criteria

Choose “Short Answer with Correct Answers” and enter borrow.

Why use this question?

Learners must recall the word rather than guess from a list. Asking for the base form avoids responses such as borrowed or borrowing.

Adapt it to your quiz

Try borrow and Borrow to check matching behavior. Add each form you want to accept and test it; do not add lend, which describes giving rather than receiving. Save the question in Question Bank with related vocabulary so you can reuse it in later review sessions.

03

Staff training: explain a step in a procedure

Staff have studied how to confirm a problem before referring a support request.

Sample question
Why should you confirm the problem description with the customer before referring the request to another team? Answer in 2–3 sentences.
Answer / grading criteria

Choose “Short Answer.” Sample criteria: understand the issue accurately — 5 points; avoid the wrong team or missing information — 5 points.

Why use this question?

Several explanations can be valid, so comparison with one fixed answer is unsuitable. The grader should assess the ideas using the criteria.

Adapt it to your quiz

Adapt the step to your organization's procedure. Agree on points and criteria with other graders and keep them separate from the learner's question. Finish grading open responses before using exam result statistics to give feedback or compare scores.

05 · Mistakes to avoid

Three common short-answer authoring mistakes

Common issue: Asking “why” but choosing automatic grading with one model answer.

How to fix it: Use “Short Answer” so a person can assess the explanation.

Common issue: Not saying whether learners should enter 40 or 40 cm².

How to fix it: Include the unit in the question and add “Enter only the number” if that is the required format.

Common issue: Grading explanations by gut feeling on each attempt.

How to fix it: Prepare the required ideas and points in advance. Test the criteria against several different responses.

Check before assigning

  • The question type matches the grading method.
  • The instructions specify a number, word, or explanation.
  • All accepted answers are entered for automatic grading.
  • Separate criteria are ready for manual grading.
  • The maximum points match the criteria.
  • You tested the quiz before assigning it.
06 · FAQs

Before you start

Explore all question formats
How do the two short-answer types differ?

“Short Answer with Correct Answers” grades against the answer list you enter. “Short Answer” is for responses a person must read, such as explanations or worked solutions.

Can I enter several accepted answers?

Yes. For the answer-key type, use “Add correct answer” to enter each accepted form. Test all of them before assigning the quiz.

Can I use short answers for fill-in-the-blank questions?

Yes. Write a sentence with a blank and ask learners to type the missing part. Choose the answer-key type for automatic grading, or “Short Answer” for responses that need manual judgment.

Where do I enter grading criteria for explanations?

The illustrated “Short Answer” editor has no rubric field. Prepare criteria in separate notes and use them when reading and grading submissions in Online Exams.
