How to secure and proctor online exams to prevent cheating effectively

Detailed instructions on how to set up security and proctoring for online exams. Enable screen recording, screen sharing, and device limits to prevent cheating effectivel

The Security & Monitoring section in Advanced Settings helps teachers monitor the testing process and restrict the use of multiple devices.

How to set up

  1. Open the quiz being edited.
  2. Open Advanced Settings.
  3. Find the Security & Monitoring section.
  4. Enable appropriate features.
  5. Check browser, device, and privacy requirements before publishing.

1. Enable screen recording

When enabled, the system records the screen during the student's test session. Teachers can use the recording to check for unusual situations.

Suitable when

  • Organizing important exams.
  • Needing to cross-check the testing process.
  • The test is conducted remotely and requires increased monitoring.

Note

  • Students must grant screen recording permissions to the browser.
  • Recording may consume significant bandwidth and device resources.
  • Incompatible browsers or devices may not be able to perform this.
  • The purpose, storage duration, and authorized viewers of the recording must be clearly communicated.
  • Recordings should only be used as reference data, not as the sole basis for concluding cheating.

2. Require screen sharing

When enabled, students must share their screen before starting the test. The system may capture screenshots as reference evidence.

Suitable when

  • Needing to monitor the use of other documents or applications.
  • Wanting to record the screen status during the test.
  • No need to record the entire process as a video.

Note

  • Students must select the correct screen or window as requested.
  • Screens containing personal information or sensitive data should not be shared.
  • Some browsers and mobile devices may restrict screen sharing features.
  • If the student refuses or revokes permission, monitoring features may not work.
  • Teachers should instruct students to check browser permissions before the exam time.

3. Only allow testing on one device

When enabled, each student can only take the test on one browser or device at a time.

Students can still open new tabs in the same browser. However, switching to another device while taking the test will be blocked.

Suitable when

  • The test only allows one session.
  • Needing to restrict students from logging in simultaneously on multiple devices.
  • Wanting to reduce the risk of account sharing during the exam.

Note

  • Students should use a device with a stable connection and sufficient battery.
  • Devices or browsers should not be changed after starting.
  • If the device encounters an issue, students should contact the teacher for support.
  • Teachers should have a plan for cases where students lose internet, experience device failure, or are unintentionally locked out of a session.

Recommendations before deployment

  • Notify students of monitoring requirements in advance.
  • Organize a practice test to check browser and access permissions.
  • Recommend using a computer and a stable internet connection.
  • Only enable features that are truly necessary.
  • Ensure the organization's privacy policy allows recording, screen sharing, and data collection.
  • Prepare a support plan for when students encounter technical errors.
