How to unpublish, edit, and republish a test effectively

Learn how to unpublish a test to fix errors, handle students currently taking the test, and republish the exam accurately. Detailed guide for teachers here.

When a mistake is found in a published quiz, teachers can unpublish it for editing. Before doing so, check if any students are currently taking the quiz or have already submitted it.

1. Unpublishing a quiz

  1. Go to Quizzes.
  2. Open the quiz you need to edit.
  3. Select Unpublish.
  4. Check the notification regarding the number of students currently taking the quiz.
  5. Choose how to handle ongoing attempts.
  6. Click Unpublish to confirm.

After unpublishing, the quiz will no longer be visible for students to start new attempts and will be moved back to an editable state.

2. Handling students currently taking the quiz

Pause

Current attempts are preserved. When the teacher republishes the quiz, students can continue their work, and the updated content will be applied to the session.

Recommended when:

  • Only minor errors need fixing.
  • You want students to continue their attempts after republishing.
  • You do not want to end current attempts.

Note: Avoid making major changes to the number of questions, answers, structure, or points when there are paused attempts, as the new content may no longer align with saved answers.

Submit all ongoing attempts immediately

The system ends and immediately submits all ongoing attempts. Students will see that the quiz has ended.

Recommended when:

  • Serious errors are found in the quiz.
  • The quiz needs to be stopped immediately.
  • Current content can no longer be used.
  • The teacher wants to record the status of attempts at the time of stopping.

Note: Check the submission limit settings before allowing students to retake the quiz after republishing.

3. Editing the quiz

After unpublishing:

  1. Open the quiz in the Draft list.
  2. Edit the necessary information or content.
  3. Recheck questions, answers, and points.
  4. Preview the quiz.
  5. Republish immediately or schedule a publish time.

Teachers can edit:

  • Title and description.
  • Target audience or participating classes.
  • Time limit and access time.
  • Submission limits.
  • Question content and options.
  • Correct answers and points.
  • Result display mode.
  • Security, proctoring, and interface settings.

4. Republishing scenarios

No students have started the quiz

Teachers can edit and republish normally. This case has the least impact on data.

Students are taking the quiz and Pause is selected

After republishing, students can continue their session. Updated content will be applied to that session.

Changes should be limited to typos, descriptions, or settings that do not directly affect answers and points.

Students are taking the quiz and Submit Immediately is selected

Ongoing attempts are ended at the time of stopping. Before republishing, the teacher needs to:

  • Check the submitted attempts.
  • Determine whether to allow students to retake the quiz.
  • Check the submission limit.
  • Clearly inform students of the handling plan.

Students have already submitted the quiz

Previously submitted attempts are still saved. If only the title, description, or non-point-related settings are edited, the teacher can republish after checking.

If answers, points, or question content are changed, you need to open the submissions and use Update Grades to recalculate results.

Major changes to the entire quiz

If you need to add or delete many questions, change the structure, or edit core content while submissions already exist, it is recommended to create a new quiz.

This helps to:

  • Preserve data from the previous quiz.
  • Avoid discrepancies in points and answers.
  • Easily distinguish results before and after editing.

5. Checklist before republishing

  • Content and answers are accurate.
  • Total points match the grading scale.
  • New access time is still appropriate.
  • Submission limit is sufficient for students needing a retake.
  • Class list and target audience are correct.
  • Old submissions have been handled.
  • Students have been notified of the changes.

Recommendation: If a quiz already has many submissions and requires significant editing, duplicate it or create a new one instead of directly modifying the old one.
