Guide to setting up grading & number of attempts on NineQuiz

Learn how to set up automatic grading, maximum scores, and attempt limits on NineQuiz. Optimize your test creation process today!

The Grading & attempts section in Advanced settings allows teachers to set the total score, score distribution, and the number of times students can take the test.

1. Automatic score distribution

When automatic score distribution is enabled

NineQuiz automatically divides the Maximum score for the test equally among the total number of questions.

Example: If a test has 20 questions and the maximum score is 10, each question is allocated 0.5 points.

How to set up

  1. Open the test you are editing.
  2. Open Advanced settings.
  3. Find the Grading & attempts section.
  4. Enable The system will automatically distribute scores.
  5. Enter the Maximum score for the test.
  6. Re-check the scores after adding or deleting questions.

Suitable when

  • Questions have equal importance.
  • The quiz has many questions of the same type.
  • Teachers want to set scores quickly and evenly.

When automatic score distribution is disabled

The system does not distribute scores automatically. Teachers must enter individual scores for each question in the editor interface.

How to do it

  1. Disable The system will automatically distribute scores.
  2. Open each question.
  3. Enter the score in the Score box.
  4. Repeat for all questions.
  5. Check the total score before publishing.

Suitable when

  • Questions have different difficulty levels.
  • The test consists of multiple sections with specific weights.
  • Essay questions require more points than multiple-choice questions.
  • Teachers want to specify scores for each question.

Example:

  • 10 recognition questions: 0.25 points each.
  • 5 application questions: 0.5 points each.
  • 1 essay question: 5 points.

2. Maximum score for the test

This is the highest total score a student can achieve, for example, 10 or 100 points.

Note:

  • When automatic distribution is enabled, the system uses the maximum score to allocate points to questions.
  • When automatic distribution is disabled, the total score of all questions must match the intended scale.
  • After adding, deleting, or changing questions, re-check all scores.
  • For question groups randomly selected from the library, check the total score of each group.

3. Number of submissions

The Number of submissions field specifies how many times each student is allowed to take and submit the test.

Example:

  • Enter 1: Students can only submit once.
  • Enter 3: Students have a maximum of three attempts to take and submit the test.
  • Enter a large number: Suitable for practice tests allowed to be retaken multiple times.

Setup suggestions

  • Official tests: should be limited to one attempt.
  • Practice tests: can allow multiple attempts.
  • Surveys: usually only need one submission per person.
  • Self-assessment tests: can allow students to retake to improve results.

Note:

  • Each time a student submits, it counts as one attempt.
  • Check this value before publishing to avoid accidentally allowing too many attempts.
  • If retakes are allowed, teachers should clearly communicate how results from different attempts are recorded.
  • When a test has random questions, each attempt may receive a different set of questions.
